Some days I’m lazy mom. Other days I’m adventure mom. On the best days, I feel like super mom. One thing I am not: a Pinterest mom. If you’re also looking for a no-pressure approach to learning at home, you’re in the right place.

My name is Meagan and I am a mom and former journalist fascinated with learning, play, and perceptions of parenthood. That’s why I started the A Little Birdie newsletter.

The Why

As a parent, we’ve often heard the phrase “You are your child’s best teacher.” I actually think it’s the world around a child that makes for the best teacher. We can help create the environment, but ultimately it’s the child who does the learning. They are way better at it than we are anyway! I swear my kids can figure out any gadget about 20 times faster than I can.

We live in an exciting time in the education and child development world. There are so many books, studies, theories, experts and parents exploring these topics. Let’s face it though - it’s a lot to take in!

I wanted to create a relatable and easy-to-access resource and community for busy parents who want to be a part of their child’s learning journey. Maybe they don’t know where to start. Maybe they feel stuck in their thinking and need a little inspiration. Maybe they want to know more about homeschooling (yes, I might be crazy, but I’m thinking about it as my child approaches kindergarten age).

On a personal level, this newsletter also comes from a need to write. I used to write so much before becoming a parent, and, well, I just haven’t had time lately. As my kids get a little older, and our pace of life a little less crazy (emphasis on little) , I want an outlet for my thoughts and community for my motherhood.

Why is it called A Little Birdie? I love sharing things I’m learning with others (“A little birdie told me . . .”) Also…bird is my nickname, coined by my husband!

What to Expect

Every Friday, A Little Birdie newsletter will include :

  • Notes from the Nest - a short personal story reflecting on learning, childhood, play, motherhood, and anything that inspires me to write. My hope here is you’ll either feel seen as a parent, learn something new you can apply in your home, or be challenged in your thinking.

  • My Top 5 - A set of links I curated for the week that I found interesting and wanted to share. Part practical, part inspiring. The Friday 5 is perfect if you are overwhelmed in a sea of resources and social media.

  • What We’re Reading - a look at either an amazing children’s book we discovered, or a quick review of book I’m reading/listening to that’s blowing my mind as a parent.

“But I don’t have time to read … “ :

Family life is bananas. I want this newsletter to be something you look forward to every week without it feeling like another item to put on your to-do list. Read it in chunks over the weekend, or read it all at once while your kids watch Blippi for the millionth time. Whatever works for you ! I will do my part and keep it easy to read and a length you can finish long before your coffee gets cold…again.

I’m a momma who loves coffee, dancing, and obsessively researching everything.

I am a mom to two amazing boys, currently ages 4.5 and 2.5. I chose to stay at home with both of them instead of going back to work. Sure, it’s been hard at times, but totally worth it. My oldest is sweet, sensitive, and science-minded. My youngest is your typical second child : wild, active, and extroverted.

My previous career was as a journalist and filmmaker, and I also worked for in non profit and education for a while. Now that my boys are out of the baby years (cue tears mixed with relief), I’m currently freelancing as a copywriter for a few clients. I definitely don’t juggle it all without dropping a few balls, but I’m proud of how I’ve learned to have realistic (ish) expectations for each season of my life.

I also love dancing, watching reruns of Law and Order SVU, and playing board games with my hubby.

So let your kids run wild and let’s get learning. Don’t forget to tell your mom friends.
